MICROSOFT DIRECT PUSH – Juniper e-mail on mobile devices

The Juniper Networks Unified Messaging team offers Microsoft Direct Push technology  allow users to view Juniper e-mail on personal mobile devices. Microsoft Direct Push (sometimes referred to as the abbreviated MSFP - for Messaging and Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0) syncs e-mail and Outlook information wirelessly between Microsoft Exchange and a Windows Mobile 5.0 device.

Please note that while Juniper provides instructions for accessing your Juniper e-mail through a personal mobile device, it is unable to provide assistance with the confguration or support for your device through the helpdesk.

Preparing Your Device for Direct Push

It is important that any user hoping to use Microsoft Direct Push have these three steps completed and in place. I will cover each item, along with a brief description, below:

1) Install Microsoft ActiveSync on Your Main Business Workstation.

We will be using the Microsoft ActiveSync application to place a certificate file on your Windows Mobile device that will allow it to communicate with our Microsoft Push Server. ActiveSync can perform additional tasks, such as data synchronization and application installation, however these are not being covered by the scope of this project and the user with the Windows Mobile device would be responsible for any actions he used this application to perform.

Microsoft ActiveSync can be acquired from the Microsoft web site.

We require ActiveSync to be version 4.2 or above.

2) Verify That Your Windows Mobile Device Has The Latest Firmware and OS Release From The Manufacturer.

Windows Mobile 5.0 was not originally deployed with MSFP, and many wireless carriers chose to omit the MSFP pack when shipping the devices. Many manufactures and wireless carriers added support later through downloadable patches available from their website.

Motorola Q: Please verify that your Motorola Q is fully up to date. Visit this link at the Motorola.com website, and follow their instructions for verifying or upgrading your firmware.

Configuring Your Device For Direct Push

These steps will cover the configuration of the device for Direct Push. These instructions will not work unless you have installed our security certificate.

All of the below steps will be performed on your Windows Mobile device.

1) Access the ActiveSync application on your Windows Mobile device by going to Start, then Programs, then ActiveSync.

2) Select the link on screen that allows you to configure Exchange server settings. You may need to select this option from the Menu key before proceeding.

3) For the server address field, please enter pushmail.juniper.net, underneath this field please check the box where it asks "This server requires an encrypted (SSL) connection." Press the Next button.

4) On the next screen, please enter your Juniper domain login information. This is the same login name and password that you use to log into your PC's on the Juniper network. Set the domain to JNPR, and check the box where it asks if you want to save the password. Press the Next button.

5) You are asked what sources from Outlook you wish to sync, typically you check the box of all sources on screen (Contacts, Calendar, E-mail, Tasks). Press the Finish button, your device is now configured for Direct Push.

What To Expect Now:

Your device will take some time to synchronize with information in your Exchange server, so please allow 1-2 hours for the sync to complete. Additionally, there are advanced settings that you can choose as the user of the device. This includes how many days worth of e-mail to store, how large you want the messages to be, and whether the mail should include attachments or not. Remember that these settings are limited by the memory size of your device.

Additionally, the device will receive a security policy that will require you to program a PIN to the device. Doing so will ensure that Juniper's corporate information is safe in case of the device being misplaced or stolen.
